Marissa is an experienced primary school teacher, teaching year Reception up to year 6 from 1998 until 2015. She qualified and worked as a SENCO in a large primary school for 7 years until 2022. Marissa since qualified as a specialist teacher in 2021 and has worked both in a school as well as privately, carrying out specialised dyslexic teaching. Alongside this, she now works as a deputy SENCO in another large primary school, while she completes her training to become a dyslexic assessor. Marissa also trained as a mindfulness teacher in 2022, and prior to this carried out a 1 year counselling course. This has helped her to offer support to children at school who may be struggling with their mental health and well-being.

Marissa lives at home with her husband and two teenage sons, one of whom is dyslexic. This is actually what led her to working in the field of special needs whilst exploring the most effective ways to support him as he progressed through school, both academically and emotionally.

Marissa is available to work with schools or families to offer specialist teacher observation-based reports. She will request any school reports/assessments already carried out with the child, as well as background information from parents/carers before coming into school. She will then come into school to discreetly observe the child in their usual setting. As well as this, she will spend some 1:1 time with the child for an informal chat and to carry out any assessments deemed necessary. Marissa will also spend time with the class teacher to discuss the child’s needs in more depth and to find out what is working well and what support is already in place. She will then write a thorough report, collating all the evidence about what is already known together with a record of her observations and suggested recommendations about how to support the child moving forward.
