Dr Liz Maslin – Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counsellor

Liz is a fully qualified Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

As an integrative practitioner, Liz utilises the creative arts, play and talking therapies to facilitate a safe space for children to explore complex emotions and navigate the challenges they face. Sessions may include the use of imagery, drawing, sand tray, therapeutic play, and self-regulation techniques. At the heart of her work is the belief that every child and young person is a unique individual.

Liz holds a particular interest in supporting neurodiverse young people. This passion is informed not only by her clinical training but through experience of working with young people for over 30 years, as a teacher, Wellbeing Lead and subsequently school counsellor, and by lived experience as a parent. She has a young adult, autistic daughter and a teenage daughter, who is dyslexic, both of whom she has supported through school-related struggles. She deeply understands the weight of the challenges families often carry.

Liz aims to meet every family with the same compassion and care she has valued in her own journey.

Liz trained at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, where she holds a Certificate in Counselling Skills with Children using the Arts, a Diploma in the Therapeutic and Educational Application of the Arts, a Diploma in Child Counselling, and an Advanced Diploma in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling. She also holds a Certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling Skills.

Prior to training as a therapist, Liz spent over 30 years as a music teacher. She holds a PhD in Psychology and Education, which studied the benefits of music and the arts in promoting the holistic wellbeing of children and young people.

Liz spent 3 years as a school counsellor prior to joining Foundations. She also works for a charity in a community setting.

She has always had a passion for this work and is delighted to be able to support children and young people at Foundations.

Liz is a member of BACP and is working towards full clinical membership of UKCP.
